On Mar. 14, thousands of students nationwide, from elementary school to college, participated in the National School Walkout. The event was a protest against gun violence and was organized by student survivors of the Feb. 14 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL. The event proved controversial, with some schools banning students from walking out of classes, and alternatively, other schools creating large scale events to recognize the walkout and memorialize the victims.Read More

Staff Ed: Recurring instances of white supremacist propaganda on campus are deeply disturbing

On the night of Feb. 18, a campus-wide email was sent from the UMW Campus Police notifying the community about stickers found around campus from a group called the Patriot Front reading “America First” and “Patriot Front.” The email cites the Anti-Defamation League which defines the Patriot Front as “a white supremacist group whose members maintain that their ancestors conquered America and bequeathed it solely to them. The Patriot Front espouses racism, anti-Semitism and intolerance under the guise of preserving the ‘ethnic and cultural origins’ of their European ancestors.” The email denounces these ideas and the presence of the propaganda on campus as a violation of UMW’s community values and encourages anyone with information to come forward.Read More

This past Sunday, Nov. 5, marked the deadliest mass shooting by an individual in Texas history, as well as the deadliest shooting in an American place of worship. When a gunman opened fire on the congregation of First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, he killed 26 people and injured at least 20 more, including children, according to the New York Times.Read More

The Hollywood bully and titan of the independent film industry, Harvey Weinstein, has been brought to his knees after reports by the New York Times and the New Yorker exposed his years of sexually assaulting starlets. In the wake of the reports, the board of the movie company that Weinstein built with his brother, Bob, fired him on Sunday. According to the Los Angeles Times, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revoked his membership, the Producers Guild terminated his membership him. Police in London and New York are investigating him for sexual assault. He is now an outcast in the entire film industry, and Weinstein’s wife has left him.Read More

UMW community stands with the victims of the Las Vegas mass shooting

Around 10:08 p.m. on Sunday Oct. 1, a mass shooting occurred at the Route 91 Harvest festival in Las Vegas leaving over 500 injured and at least 59 dead according to ABC News. The event has marked one of the deadliest mass shootings to take place in modern U.S. history. Similar events have taken place recently throughout the world such as the suicide bombing at the Ariana Grande concert in Manchester and the fatal shooting of ‘Voice’ singer Christina Grimmie last year.Read More
