University of Mary Washington’s cross country team competed this weekend at the 2017 Capital Athletic Conference Championship. The women’s team finished in third place, giving them a spot on the podium, while the men’s team finished fourth. The event was hosted by Christopher Newport University in Newport News on Saturday morning. The championship included teams from, Frostburg State, St. Mary’s, Marymount and Penn State.

Maggie Larkin, a sociology major in the Special Education program, is a freshman on varsity cross country. She has had first-hand experience with jumping into a varsity sport straight out of high school. Larkin ran cross country at Robinson High School in Fairfax, VA, she made it to regionals and states during her time there. At the UMW cross country opener, she led the women’s team with a third place finish at 15 minutes and 10 seconds.

Many sports teams practice on fields, some in the gym, in the pool and others throughout the immediate Fredericksburg area. It is important for those who are on sports teams to focus while they are training. The women’s cross-country team is made up of twelve women who all run throughout The University of Mary Washington and the Fredericksburg area.

I recently sat down with new head cross country and track & field coach Kunle Lawson. Lawson is brand new to the program this year after long time head coach Stan Soper retired at the end of this past spring season. Lawson joined the UMW team from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio where he served as director of track & field since 2011.

The men and women cross country teams have begun their new season behind new head coach, Kunle Lawson. They can be seen walking in packs together around campus, running around Fredericksburg, in clumps at Seacobeck for dinner or walking from the gym after workouts.
The University of Mary Washington’s indoor track and field celebrated at the University of Maryland Terrapin Invitational, their season opener, earlier this month after three athletes each set indoor records for UMW.
With the season now in full swing, the men’s and women’s cross country teams showed promise for the rest of the 2013 fall season this past weekend at the Dickinson College long and short relays. The men’s team placed eighth out of thirty schools, and the women earned fifth.
