In March, Juliette Landphair, Vice President for Student Affairs, sent out a statement on behalf of the university and its staff announcing that the University of Mary Washington settled a lawsuit with Jasmine Orsted. A former student, who said that she felt racially discriminated against after being cut from the women’s basketball team before her tryout date.

Amid the unprecedented success of the University of Mary Washington’s volleyball and women’s basketball programs, it took no time for the teams’ respective coaches to ship out of Division III and into the Division I spotlight.

Coach Deena Applebury and the University of Mary Washington women’s basketball team head into the 2016-2017 basketball season ranked No. 20 in the country in the D3Hoops.com preseason poll and No. 22 in WBCA poll. After finishing the 2015-2016 season with a 24-5 overall record and earning the team’s sixth ever CAC Championship, the team has high aspirations for this year.

With prize money on the line, freshman Paige Haskins stood anxiously at center court, ready to sink the winning shot. With a running start and hefty heave, the ball soared through the air and the crowd went wild as it rattled through down the rim.
