The University of Mary Washington recently received a $300,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women.

Last week, administrators stood alongside students outside Lee Hall and invited students to donate new washcloths, pots, pans, high chairs, blankets and pillows while they strolled Campus Walk. Though this may seem like a strange list, the items hold a crucial purpose for the members of the UMW community.
Students can be skeptical when they see lip-stained fliers with “Vagina Monologues” written across the page. Fear not, for it is just another advertisement for one of the University of Mary Washington’s fastest growing performance traditions.

On Thurs., Feb. 14, women and men from all over Fredericksburg came together in the Great Hall to stand up against domestic violence. Hosted by Empowerhouse and the University of Mary Washington’s’s James Farmer Multicultural Center, One Billion Rising set out to inform and empower women against domestic abuse with speeches, dancing, poems and pink and red balloons.
