The rosy hues of the sun began to fade as 412 people from the University of Mary Washington and the Fredericksburg community gathered near the Bell Tower. Glowing figures covered with strokes of neon paint stood at the start line, in the evening hours, waiting excitedly for the clock to strike eight. As the run commenced, the rhythmic thumping of participants’ feet drowned out the music that was playing throughout Campus Walk for UMW’s 5k “Glow Run.”

With President Paino’s official inauguration just around the corner, he’s been eager to roll out new ideas for the future of the University of Mary Washington. But with all the excitement that surrounds these new decisions, the Board of Visitors has been pushing one change in particular.

UMW President Troy Paino decided to explore the downtown area in his own way on Tuesday. The weather was unseasonably warm as President Paino traveled through downtown Fredericksburg on horseback. Paino, along with equestrian team member and junior Psychology major, Nikki Ferrell, received several stares as they pit stopped in popular Fredericksburg shops. This is all part of a promotional video that Paino is filming for upcoming UMW students.

The University of Mary Washington inaugurated the Phi Eta Sigma chapter on Tuesday Nov. 15, to applaud first-year students who excel in academia. President Paino accepted the charter from the executive director of the honor society, Elaine Powell. It is the oldest society to honor freshmen academic excellence in the United States.

Eagle Nation Day hosted by University of Mary Washington athletics was filled with fun and free activities that allowed you to be on your feet and keep your mind active. Announced aptly on President’s Day, Troy Paino has been confirmed by the University of Mary Washington to be its 10th president following Rick Hurley’s retirement on June 30. Paino will be on campus Friday, Feb. 19 from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Chandler Ballroom at the University Center to meet students.
