This semester the Mary Washington Baseball Team has been hard at work with more games than any previous season and already busy student schedules.

UMW is colloquially known as “University of Mostly Women” but how does that translate to the university’s sports teams? Specifically in the case of softball and baseball, equity seems questionable.

The University of Mary Washington baseball team is off to a 9-5 start in their 2017 campaign. Last year, the team went 24-15 and was ranked as high as No. 12 in the nation. Fifth year head coach, Wayne Riser and the Eagles faced some adversity immediately coming into the season when a number of key players quit or ran into ineligibility, notably some pitchers on the team. The Eagles are currently with seven pitchers on the roster, along with a number of position players who can pitch as well, though, not being their main position.

University of Mary Washington had a convincing victory over Virginia Wesleyan College on Monday, April 11. Johnathan Truba earned the start for the Eagles giving up five hits, five runs and three walks over the course of four innings. The Eagles committed three errors during the first four innings, but recovered well offensively.

The University of Mary Washington baseball team was bumped from the Capitals Athletic Conference tournament earlier than it would have liked to after a 9-6 loss to Salisbury in the semifinal of the tournament.
