UMW Cross Country

University of Mary Washington’s cross country team competed this weekend at the 2017 Capital Athletic Conference Championship. The women’s team finished in third place, giving them a spot on the podium, while the men’s team finished fourth. The event was hosted by Christopher Newport University in Newport News on Saturday morning. The championship included teams from, Frostburg State, St. Mary’s, Marymount and Penn State.

Maggie Larkin, a sociology major in the Special Education program, is a freshman on varsity cross country. She has had first-hand experience with jumping into a varsity sport straight out of high school. Larkin ran cross country at Robinson High School in Fairfax, VA, she made it to regionals and states during her time there. At the UMW cross country opener, she led the women’s team with a third place finish at 15 minutes and 10 seconds.

The sudden and tragic death of running legend Steve Prefontaine sparked a social movement in the world of running. Apart from being a fairly decent runner, “Pre” was most well-known for his majestic hair styles, particularly that perched above his upper lip. The signature look spread like wildfire in the running world and eventually found its way into the University of Mary Washington cross country team. The look was not met with the same level of affection as other schools, however.
