UMW men’s basketball

Black students at the University of Mary Washington are disproportionately represented in the athletics program. This is clear to see when glancing at some varsity sports rosters. Take for instance the UMW men’s basketball team; more than half of their roster is ostensibly Black. In contrast, Black students make up 6% of the student population.

This weekend the baseball team went up against Montclair State University for their season opening. There were four games throughout the weekend with the Eagles coming out even, winning two out of the four games.

Khiorie Stewart, a 6-foot-3 junior guard from Ashburn, Virginia had an impressive week of play for Mary Washington and was named Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 5, 2018. After helping lift the Eagles to two CAC wins the week before being named Player of the Week, Stewart seemed like an obvious choice for the title.
As we say goodbye to another exciting and successful volleyball season, and the many club sports seasons as well, the next competitive winter sports are right around the corner. After Thanksgiving break, men and women’s basketball will be starting up their seasons, both teams have made some drastic roster changes in the offseason.

Saturday, Oct. 14 the University of Mary Washington men’s basketball team participated in The Annual Fredericksburg’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The walk began at Jefferson Square, continued across campus walk and back. The entire basketball team came out along with all of the coaches, their families and dogs. The walk raised over over $160,000, and the numbers are still rising.

As basketball season approaches, Eric Shaw, a senior power forward on UMW’s basketball team and communications major, reflects on his relationship with basketball and how it has shaped him into the man he is today. He began playing basketball competitively at the age of six and has continued since then.

More than 200 area Special Olympic athletes took part in a regional Special Olympics Basketball Invitational at the University of Mary Washington’s Anderson Center on Sunday, jan. 21. UMW Athletics hosted the day-long event as part of an NCAA Division III national partnership with the Special Olympics organization.

The 2013-2014 season for the University of Mary Washington’s men’s basketball team was one of many historic accomplishments. The men’s team, coached by Rod Wood, found themselves setting personal bests on many occasions.
