UMW Track and Field

The University of Mary Washington track and field took on the Trojan Challenge last weekend starting on Mar. 23, with a sizable field of 13 schools competing in Mt. Olive, North Carolina.

At the Capital Athletic Conference Track & Field Championships in February, University of Mary Washington track freshman Erin Andrewlevich was thrown in at the last minute to anchor the women’s 4×400-meter relay.

Daniel Forjan is a junior at the University of Mary Washington and has been a member of the track and field team since his freshman year. Forjan holds school records participating in shot put, discus, hammer and the weight throw with personal bests throws of 15.79 meters in shot put, 44.09 meters in discus, 41.69 meters in hammer and 14.67 meters in weight throw while at UMW.

On March 31, the University of Mary Washington men and women’s track and field teams hosted the Battleground Relays, welcoming a number of other teams to Fredericksburg and UMW’s brand new outdoor track and field facility.

This past weekend, members of the University of Mary Washington track and field team came out to commemorate an event 35 years in the making. The first new track and field facility since 1979 was dedicated and opened up for use by both the team and the surrounding community.

I recently sat down with new head cross country and track & field coach Kunle Lawson. Lawson is brand new to the program this year after long time head coach Stan Soper retired at the end of this past spring season. Lawson joined the UMW team from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio where he served as director of track & field since 2011.
