With the University of Mary Washington being roughly an hour away from our nation’s capital, students of Mary Washington have their takes on how the local Washington Redskins will fare this upcoming season.

“And strike three! You’re out!” As the Nationals continue their playoff run this 2017 season, we can only hope that we don’t hear that phrase too often. At least not in reference to the Nats. Unfortunately for Washington fans, the teams from the area do not have a stellar track record when it comes to playoff success.

The Washington Redskins avoided their usual 0-2 record start this season, with a big 27-20 win over the Los Angeles Rams. Following their brutal loss to the Philadelphia Eagles at home, Redskins fans were relieved to see them get a big win. Even though Washington will be coming home with a victory, they struggled to get it. Although rookie, Samaje Perine got most of the touches on offense, running back Chris Thompson carried the team early in the game by setting the bar at two rushing touchdowns along with 77 yards on only three carries.

The Washington Redskins finished the 2016-17 regular season with a record of 8-7- 1 and failed to make the NFL playoffs, yet again. The Redskins have not made a playoff appearance since 2015.
To make things worse …

On April 22, a new swagger was brought to the D.C. sports scene. The Washington Redskins announced the signing of Pro-Bowl cornerback Josh Norman to a 5-year, $75 million contract. Norman, who spent last season being a dominate force in the secondary for NFC Champion Carolina Panthers, signed with Washington because of “the sense of wanting to win,” as he explained in an interview on Sportscenter just days later. Because of this key addition to the roster and a successful training camp and preseason, many analysts predicted to repeat as NFC East champions this season.

It is now the offseason for the Washington Redskins after a tough loss to the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card Round of the NFL Playoffs. Luckily enough for me, I was able to attend the game. I was quite surprised actually, the atmosphere at FedEx Field was at an all-time high, I have never seen Redskins’ fans so proud to be apart of the franchise. I have been to FedEx Field in previous years and in those visits the atmosphere was definitely not as positive as it was this season. Of course it was a postseason game but I believe that is why the atmosphere was so exhilarating.

To many Redskins fans, Sunday’s performance for Kirk Cousins can be perceived one of two ways: optimistically or cautiously. Though the 102nd overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft posted a perfect quarterback rating in the team’s routing of the New Orleans Saints, Redskins fans are all too familiar with the glimmer of hope shining only to be painfully shut off.
