Black students at the University of Mary Washington are disproportionately represented in the athletics program. This is clear to see when glancing at some varsity sports rosters. Take for instance the UMW men’s basketball team; more than half of their roster is ostensibly Black. In contrast, Black students make up 6% of the student population.

Over the past few weeks, the UMW community showed up in a big way for 9-year-old Balian from Western Wayne Elementary School in Indiana, who just had his ninth birthday where none of his 30 classmates attended. Dr. John Broome, associate professor for the College of Education here at UMW, heard of Balian’s story from a close friend and sent out emails to his students requesting that they make as many birthday cards as they can for Balian.

The University of Mary Washington’s women’s rugby team kicked off their second] conference game Saturday, Sept. 17, 2016, at the Battleground Complex against Longwood University. The team pulled through with a 66-0 win against the Lancers. Improving their record 1-1 in the Capital Area Conference.

Saturday, Oct. 24, was not just homecoming for the students of the University of Mary Washington, it was a very special day for the men and women rugby teams, as well as the rest of the athletic department at Mary Washington.

The start of the 2015-2016 school year saw exciting news for four of the University of Mary Washington’s sports teams. The men’s and women’s rugby and men and women’s crew teams have been upgraded from being a club organization to being a team sport under the umbrella of athletics, but not a varsity team.
