For many people, the month of October is known for the celebration of brisk air and changing foliage. However, for many the month signifies the importance of recognizing domestic violence survivors and the education of preventing future acts of violence.
The UMW Office of Title IX is dedicated to raising awareness and prevention for this issue during the month of October, and hosts events on campus that focus on detecting cautionary signs and inhibiting future acts of domestic violence.
One of the most well-known events hosted by the department is the Red Flag Campaign, which every year cloaks campus with the somber reminder of the warning-signs of dating violence.
In addition to events like this, the Office of Title IX will be hosting other events throughout campus in the upcoming month. Planned by student leaders, Title IX staff, and local survivor support programs, the sponsored activities will focus on bystander intervention, prevention and available support services.
Even though October is a month of academic stress, it is important to take time to recognize the survivors and victims of domestic violence and take the means necessary to make UMW a safe campus for all individuals.
During the upcoming month, please take the time to unite with the Office of Title IX and the Blue & Gray Press as we stand against domestic violence not only on our campus, but across the nation.
